Michelle was joined this year by Anne Taylor and they formed part of a twelve strong team, with race times ranging from 41 to 68 minutes. All the sponsorship has yet to be collected but we expect to have far exceeded past year's totals. Well done evryone who took part. See you next year! LABC Building Excellence Awards Taylor Tuxford Associates were proud to sponsor the Best Large Commercial Building at the recent Building excellence awards for the North & East Yorkshire Region. These prestigious awards are hosted annually by Local authority building control (LABC) and are intended to promote excellence in building. LABC Building Excellence Award’s website boasts that the ‘Local, regional and national award ceremonies are held throughout the year with categories incorporating every class of building… from domestic extensions, social housing, apartments, schools, hospitals, commercial and retail to industrial properties. Only winners of regional awards are eligible for entry in the national awards’ Rhys Taylor has been the Chariman of the judging panel for the South Yorkshire and Humber Region for the past three years and it is with pleasure that we recall our own acheivement in winning an award ourselves in 2008 in the best domestic extension category. Double election We are pleased to announce that Rhys Taylor has been elected as the new Chairman for the Yorkshire and Humber Region of the Association of Building Engineers following a year as an ordinary member and Michelle Tuxford has been re-elected as an ordinary member. These positions were formally approved at the Region’s AGM held at The Niagara Conference Centre in Sheffield on 25th January 2011. The Association of Building Engineers (ABE) is the professional body for those specialising in the technology of building. Founded in 1925 under the name 'The Incorporated Association of Architects and Surveyors', the ABE provides the prime qualification Building Engineer, a title that exactly reflects the professional expertise of members and one that is readily understood in the European Union and beyond. It has a wide-ranging membership, drawn from both within the United Kingdom and overseas, and enjoys freedom from constitutional restraints. These advantages combine to give it a unique independence and breadth of influence, with consequent national and international recognition of its qualifications both in the public and private sectors and in the construction industry at large where it is represented on educational, codes and standards, legislative, technical and other advisory bodies. There are a number of new faces on the committee and we would like to welcome Karen Troth, Alan Dawson, Richard Hobson, Basil Parylo and Martin Stansfield. At the same time of course, several committee members have stepped-down and we would like to record our thanks to each of them collectively, for their valued contributions. The committee intends to continue to hold monthly free CPD events at various venues around the Region and also, to arrange at least one (or possibly more) social events for members and their families. The committee also intend to further promote links with centres of further and higher education; links have already been forged with West Lindsey College and the Leeds College of Building and we hope very shortly to be able to add at least one more college to that list, with others to follow later. This industry has an ever-ageing workforce and the need to get younger members of the profession interested and involved with an organisation such as the Association of Building Engineers is paramount importance. Most significantly, the committee proposes to host a full-day Regional Exhibition and Conference on May 12th 2011 in South Yorkshire. This event will be intended to provide delegates with a minimum of 6 hours CPD toward their annual requirement. Race for Life 2010 Michelle entered the race for life held recently at Herringthorpe Playing fields and was joined by three extra 'racer's and between them raised £400 for cancer research. Their time this year was a respectable 1 hour 3 minutes. It is hoped that their group will be even bigger next year and that they can beat their 'race' time. Our thanks go out to all those who sponsored the team and helped raise money for such vital research. Party Wall Etc Act 1996 On 26th November and in conjunction with the Yorkshire and Humber Region of the Association of Building Engineers, Taylor Tuxford Associates was proud to host a half-day free seminar giving an update on the Party Wall etc Act 1996. We were very pleased to greet a total of 94 delegates to the seminar, which was presented by our Director, Rhys Taylor and was held at the Bailey House offices of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, to whom we give our thanks for their hospitality. The delegates came from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and included Surveyors, Architectural Designers, Structural Engineers, Building Control Officers, Estate Agents and Solicitors, amongst others. Rhys’ presentation covered the history of the Act and explained the basic areas of proposed works that would fall under the scope of the Act’s provisions. He went on to explain the implications of a Dispute occurring under the Act and how to deal with it and gave a number of references where delegates could obtain more information. Finally, Rhys, together with our Surveyline Direct Group colleague Robin Brown presented a number of interesting case histories of our own and brought everyone up to date with some more recent court cases, giving a synopsis of the judgement in each case and its implications on professionals working with the Act. We were very pleased with the praise received from delegates for the content and quality of the seminar and we hope to be able to hold similar seminars in the future. Bluebell Wood The Company Directors are pleased to announce their involvement with BluCrew who are a newly formed support group for Bluebell Wood children's hospice, providing entertainment and fundraising events throughout the region. Their debut performance was held on the 5th December 2009 at the Christmas Fayre at Wickersley Library and Community Centre where BluCrew performed a festive mix of traditional christmas carols and songs. This event raised in excess of £1000 which will go towards the running costs of the hospice which requires £2.5 million pounds each year. Website launch Taylor Tuxford Associates are pleased to announce the launch of their new website from August 2009. Race for Life 2009 Michelle joined thousands of participants recently at the Race for Life event held at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre in Rotherham. Michelle and her race partner Alison completed the 5Km 'run' in 60 mins and between them raised over £300 to go towards the cancer research programme. Both Michelle and Alison would like to thank all those who provided sponsorship for this event. Show Fundraiser The company Directors are pleased to announce their invovlement with a fundraising show held recently at The Clifton Meadows Residential Care Home for the elderly. Rhys, Anne and Michelle joined the 'Friends of Clifton Meadows' in their recent production 'Around the World in 80 minutes'. The 'Friends' gave the appreciative audience a round the world flight consisting of songs, dance and comedy sketches which ran over two nights. We would like to thank the Director, Producer and all the crew and staff for their continuing enthusiasm and support and we are pleased to advise that the event raised over £420 which will go towards the resident's fund. ABE President Rhys Taylor recently handed over the role of President of the Association of Building Engineers to Beryl Menzies at a networking luncheon held at East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, on 08 May 2009. The event was attended by a number of distinguished guests, fellow members and industry professionals to witness Rhys Taylor delivering his final Presidential Address. During his year in office Rhys has travelled to more than 20 different towns and cities within the UK where he has met fellow Association Members and other professionals. This challenging role has also seen him travel abroad to Düsseldorf , Strasbourg and Hong Kong. For more details please visit the Association of Building Engineer's website.
